Cold snacks:
- Apple Wedges - with raisins, peanut butter or cottage cheese.
- Applesauce Cup - unsweetened.
- Avocado on Bread - 1/2 an avocado spread on a slice of whole grain bread.
- Baby Carrots & Nuts - try different nuts on different days; Almond, Brazil, Cashew, Hazelnut, Pumpkin Seeds, Walnuts.
- Banana and 3 dates or 2 dried figs
- Cheese & Crackers
- Cherry Tomatoes - handful of Cherubs. (Taste so good!)
- Cookies & Milk - home baked whole grain cookie like Oatmeal Raisin.
- Fresh Fruit - a piece of fruit in season; apple, pear, peach, nectarine, couple of apricots, grapes, cherries, orange, tangerine, mango, figs, plum, slice of watermelon, wedge of pineapple.
- Fruit Cup/Pouch - with no sugar added and no food coloring.
- Frozen Yogurt
- Granola or Energy bar - stick with the natural food company versions.
- Hardboiled Egg
- Hummus & Pita - or on crackers.
- Melon Cubes - cantaloupe or honeydew.
- Muffin- small home baked (half the size of commercial ones) with tea or a glass of milk. Common flavors; banana-walnut, blueberry, carrot-apple, corn, lemon-poppy seed, pumpkin, raisin bran.
- Peanut Butter & Crackers
- Quick Bread - a slice of home baked bread with tea or milk; banana, Cornbread, cranberry-nut, Pumpkin, Zucchini.
- Rice Crackers
- Smoothie
- Soy Nuts or Edamame - for a quick thaw, place frozen shelled edamame in a strainer and run under some hot water.
- String Cheese or Babybel
- Tortilla Chips - with bean dip, guacamole or salsa.
- Trail mix
- Veggie Chips
- Yogurt Cup - if a cup is not filling enough, include some fruit with it.
Hot snacks:
- Bruschetta
- English Muffin - whole wheat toasted with fruit preserve or nut butter spread.
- Instant Soup - dry soup mixes in a paper cup. Just add boiling water.
- Jalapeno Poppers - available at Costco.
- Mini Pizza - English muffin, pizza sauce and shredded mozzarella.
- Nachos - corn chips with melted cheese and a salsa or guacamole dip.
- Pakora - veggies dipped in a gram (garbanzo bean) flour batter and fried. For an occasional special treat at tea time.
- Popcorn - air popping is preferred. Some season it with cinnamon, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, or other non-salt spices (coriander & cumin).
- Quesadilla - whole grain tortilla with melted cheese. Spread some Spicy Bean to add some flavor or "Stuffed" varieties include some veggies.
- Samosa - curried potato and peas stuffed pastry. For an occasional special treat at tea time.
- Sour Dough Toast & Milk - Don't ask me why. My kids liked it.
